 The Legacy

GrandMaster Shodai Soke DR. Shorty Mills

The story of Pagoda Ryu begins with its founder, Hanshi and Shodai Soke (first-generation Grandmaster), Shorty Mills. A lifelong martial artist, Grandmaster Mills dedicated more than six decades to the study, practice, and teaching of martial arts, leaving an indelible mark on the martial arts community.

Early Life and Martial Arts Journey

Shorty Mills’ passion for martial arts ignited at the age of 14. By 16, he had already achieved the rank of black belt, and by 17, he was an apprentice instructor, sharing his growing knowledge and skill with others. His relentless pursuit of excellence and his natural teaching ability set the foundation for what would become a lifelong career.

Over the course of his martial arts journey, Grandmaster Mills trained and mentored over 200 black belt students, many of whom went on to become national and world champions. His influence extended far beyond his own students, shaping the broader martial arts community and earning him a reputation as a visionary leader and innovator.

Founding Pagoda Ryu

In 1968, Grandmaster Mills achieved the rank of third-degree black belt, a milestone that marked a turning point in his martial arts career. Seven years later, in 1975, he founded the first Pagoda Ryu martial arts school, establishing a system that would eventually gain international recognition.

Pagoda Ryu is a mixed martial arts system that blends the strengths of five foundational styles: Taekwondo, Jiu Jitsu, Aikido, Kempo, and Shorin Ryu Karate. Grandmaster Mills’ vision was to create a system that was not only effective in combat but also deeply rooted in the principles of discipline, respect, and personal growth.

Military Service

From 1965 to 1969, Grandmaster Mills served as a Navy SEAL, participating in operations during the Vietnam War. This experience further honed his physical and mental discipline, shaping his approach to martial arts. The rigor, precision, and resilience required in his military service became integral components of Pagoda Ryu, influencing both its technical and philosophical foundations.

Achievements and Recognition

Over his illustrious career, Grandmaster Mills achieved the highest ranks in multiple martial arts disciplines:

  • 10th Degree Black Belt in Moo Do Kwon Taekwondo

  • 10th Degree Black Belt in Shorin Ryu Karate

  • 7th Degree Black Belt in Kendo

  • 7th Degree Black Belt in Aikido

His accomplishments extend beyond rank and technical skill. Grandmaster Mills won five world championships, over 25 regional championships, and 10 national championships. His exceptional contributions to the martial arts earned him induction into several prestigious halls of fame, including:

  • The World Martial Arts Hall of Fame

  • The Triad International Hall of Fame

  • The United States Karate Alliance Hall of Fame

Certification of Pagoda Ryu

In 1996, Pagoda Ryu was officially recognized as a viable martial arts system by the World Martial Arts Federation and the World Sokeship Council. This certification marked a significant milestone, validating the system’s effectiveness and elevating its status within the martial arts community. With this recognition, Grandmaster Mills was awarded the rank of 10th Degree Black Belt in Pagoda Ryu, solidifying his place as a pioneer in the martial arts world.
